Waves catches up with Matt Hoy.

Novocastrian ex-world tour surfer Matt Hoy is a legend. He recently starred in Andrew Mooney’s flick, ‘One Month on the Moon,’ with a humorous guest appearance and wants to start his own AC/DC cover band. Waves sat down with him for a quick beer and a few laughs. Here’s what went down. more>

RESURFACED

Waves catches up with Julian Wilson for all the latest on his upcoming profile Scratching The Surface.

With just under six months until the release of Julian Wilson’s debut profile flick Scratching The Surface, shit is starting to hit boiling point. Clips are being bagged, tagged and logged. Music is being cleared and the jigsaw pieces are all falling into place. Waves recently caught up with Julian while he was on one of the last clip missions to Brazil. This is what he had to say.  more>

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING-Jordy Smith

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING

Jordy Smith grows into a very large pair of shoes

You know the Jordy Smith story. Prodigious talent, impoverished background, New Pier tutorship, meteoric junior career, wild card triumph, frenzied contract speculation, Nike sponsorship snub, Shaun Tomson endorsement, new generation hype... He was the man who would be king, even before he reached adulthood. But after a lacklustre ’08 rookie year, the same people who were blowing hot air up his arse were questioning the size and puffiness of the distorted balloon man they had created. Was he really that good?  more>

PIMP MY RIDE

PIMP MY RIDE

Words: waves

The Waves editorial team recently overheard the Editor tuning a chick in the hope of scoring a root. Says the girl to Nugget: “So, can you, like, do airs and stuff like the pros?” Replies Nugget to the girl: “Yeah I can do airs. I do them every surf and I stomp them too…” The boys called bullshit on Nugget’s charlatan behaviour, cut his wings off and exposed him as the Emu that he really is. Conversation then turned to whether riding a pro’s board could make them surf better. Hence this feature. more>

Waves Board Review 2009

DISCOVER YOUR MAGIC STICK

Words: EtHDOG | Photos: Nathan Smith | Video: Riley Blakeway

The plan was simple: hit Bali and score six-foot Padang, four-foot Keramas, seven-foot Bingin, three-foot Canguu, eight-foot Ulus and two-foot Dreamland. Unfortunately we didn’t score any of ’em (except Canguu and we’re kinda thankful we didn’t surf Dreamland). What we’re saying, though, is we tried to score a variety of different waves to get the most from each individual craft. Hence discovering what type of wave each board performed best in. To this end, we where partially successful. Nevertheless, to put things into perspective ... more>

THE UNTURNED STONES

MArch 2010 | Interviewed by Ethdog.

You might have read about the following 10 personalities at one point. We’re probably even introducing you to a couple for the first time. The interviews are not your traditional long- winded profile pieces, but rather questions and answers which adhere to the laws of brevity and getting to the point. It’s their words on the page. Absolute verbatim as we strive to leave no stone unturned.  more>

Craig Anderson

HUSTLE AND FLOW

Craig Anderson styles onto the world stage.

“Nando Chicken” – that’s what they’re calling Craig Anderson around Newcastle and it’s beginning to stick. Nando rhymes with Ando, but it’s three times more clever than that; there’s the chicken legs reference and the fast food association. Nando’s, famous for their flame-grilled chickeny delights, has its roots in South Africa, but is steadily becoming world famous... just like its surfing namesake. Watch Nando dance across the waves. Couldn’t you just roll him in Portuguese spices and eat him up? more>
