The Crystal Ball

The Crystal Ball, is weekly post where we ask the pros, industry folk and other superiorly intelligent people to make some wild predictions about this year’s World Tour. Their calculated answers could be outrageous or on the money. This week we spoke to Novacastrian pro-junior shredder Ryan Callinan.
Who will win this year’s World Tour?
I’m going to have to say Kelly will win. He seems to be pretty determined this year and wants to get a tenth World Title. He’s on a roll at the moment and he is surfing amazing. I hope Taj gets back on the ball and takes him down but I still think Kelly will win. I don’t want him to win though; I’d rather an Aussie like Taj or Parko to take it out.
Who will win the WQS?
This year is going to be strange because of the one ratings system coming into place. I think guys like Gabe Kling and Josh Kerr will get back on tour because they have had a good start to the year. With such good results I reckon those guys will get back on tour for sure. They’ve been ripping.
Who has been the standout performer this year?
Everyone has stepped up their game this year in both the free surfing and competitive aspects. From what I’ve seen I’d say Chippa Wilson or Josh Kerr have been pushing the limits free surfing. In the contests I’d say Taj and Jordy would be my pick. Jordy has just seemed to find his form and is putting everything together.
What’s been the most progressive maneuver?
It would have to be one of those Alley-oop, pop shuvit things that Chippa Wilson does in the landscape-altered clip. I wouldn’t even know what to call it but the move is insane. I reckon he’s got some new things up his sleeve that will blow every ones minds.
Where do you see the future of surfing?
I see it in the air. Every one is doing mental things in the air and it’s only going to get better. I don’t think power surfing will be around for too much longer. I know it’s a big statement but with the judging criteria changing guys will be pulling crazy in heats. They will only get big scores for those kinds of moves. You’re not going to get a ten for doing a hack.-Sam Paterson
