The Bare Essentials

Pro surfers spend a lifetime in airports. They’re often stung with excess baggage and come down with chronic influenza from the reconditioned air. The life of a traveling surfer definitely isn’t as good as it seems. With the rise of excess baggage charges it’s become difficult to pack your life into a suitcase and scoot abroad. This week we poked our heads into Dion Agius’ belongings to see what he travels the globe with.
iPhone
This little piece of technology comes with me everywhere. Most surfers I know don’t leave home without it because of what it can do. Emails, movies and music-what more could you ask for? I tend to use the maps application on mine the most though. I seem to get lost everywhere I go and the little bad boy always saves me.
Laptop
It’s a Macbook Pro and it’s a step up from my phone. I’ve got it for my emails, cruising around on the web and getting creepy on my blog. I take an external hard along with it to store a heap of shit. It’s mainly got photos and footage from the trips that I’ve done on it. It all gets dumped on there from all the places we go. There are a few weird pieces on there; I’ll have to clean it up soon. If someone found it, I wouldn’t know what they’d be thinking (laughs).
Cameras
I like to take at least one camera with me wherever I go. I’ll normally take a digital and film cam so I get the best of both worlds. I get to travel with these amazing people so it’s my way of documenting it all. My Canon 450D is always loaded up and ready to go.
Clothes
I’m usually pretty bad with packing my clothes. I try to pack as light as possible but I always end up taking way too much shit. We all like to go out when we are away so you’ve gotta have shit to wear. You don’t wanna wear stale clothes out every single time. I’m pretty lazy when I’m traveling as well so I never wash my clothes. I reckon it’s a lot easier to have a lot of clean clothes rather than going to wash your clothes.
Boards
I like to jam as many boards as I can into my bag. These days airline companies seem to charge you just for the bag and not for how many boards are in it. If I can I’ll normally take a little fish, about four shortboards and a step-up. I’ve been riding this little board called the ‘Slug’ that Super are shaping and it goes insane. It’s perfect for when the waves are less than two foot. It’s something that I definitely can’t leave home without.
