West Knows Best.
June 1st, 2010 by Ethan | Filed under Profile Movie.“One of the best days of my life,” exclaimed Mick Fanning before shoveling way too much pasta into his mouth. All of us are tired, hungry and surf stoked. We just had the most productive day of surfing so far on this Scratching The Surface mission to the West. It’s about 8pm and we’re all crowded around a tiny monitor in the lounge room of our digs watching the days catch play out.
It started with an early session at Gas Bay. It was a little maxed out. Taj, knowing better, split for a favourite spot near home while Mick and Julian battled the shifty line-up. There’s a couple of rides in there but everyone is keen to fast forward to the second session which went down at a well-known right between Margie’s and Yallingup. It was inconsistent but the odd set doubled and funneled. Mick and Jules picked off a few okay rides before the tide hit the optimal level and things improved radically. There was a 30 minute purple patch where the two traded off solid pits on the long right. Some of these rides will feature in the movie guaranteed. Local grom Jack Robinson was also out there. “That’s my new favourite surfer,” spits Mick excitedly as we watch a couple of Jack’s waves on screen. After the session Mick claimed he hasn’t had better waves in 2010.
The footage of the days third session had everyone losing their shit. The helicopter vision is wild and shows all three of the boys getting shacked out of their minds from above. After the show Julian and the chopper pilot start collaborating on fresh angles and new perspectives to go for on day five. Sounds cool. The forecast for tomorrow looks dreamy. The winds will be light and offshore and the swell is clean. The sun will shine. Life in the west is marvellous. Hold the cover boys. – Ronnie Blakey
Mick – makes the call back to Cooly, “Yeah, mate. It’s pumping here. What’s Snapper like? Flat? Suck eggs.”

Go stick ya chopper and skis up your arse fellas. And maybe try somewhere a bit more isolated next time. You coulda had so many other spots to yourself all day, but no, had to pollute a perfect day for the sake of a movie. Thanks.
