No Techno Please.

There must be something in the water at Margaret River. The place seems to churn out throngs of talented surfers including: Taj Burrow, Yadin Nicol and Jay Davies. Whilst those guys are reaping the rewards from their freakish abilities, a new breed is following in their footsteps. Creed McTaggart is certainly leading the way after recently taking out the Billabong Occy Grom Comp at D’bah. He’s been in South Africa for the last two weeks and has just arrived home from a stint in South Africa checking out the World Tour proceedings. Waves caught up to him for a quick chat.
Has growing up in Margaret River had a positive influence on your surfing?
Yeah, I think growing up in Margs is amazing. I’ve always lived there so I can get super hectic on guys and tell them to ‘beat it’ if they get out-of-line (laughs). It’s the kind of place where there is always something going on. There are a bunch of different waves and some really good surfing goes on. You’ve only got to look at the calibre of the guys in the line-up. I get to surf with some of the best surfers in the world.
What’s a normal day like for you living in Margs?
I normally wake around 8:00 am. We usually have a huge cook up at home, then I’ll ring a mate of my to see if he’s keen to film. We’ll drive down the beach listening to some pretty mad old school punk rock. I mostly surf Gas. For lunch, I’ll get a foot long meatball roll with extra cheese from Subway. If there are waves around I’ll look for another surf somewhere. It’s normally the river mouth in the arvos, but don’t tell anyone or I’ll kill you. When I get home I try and nail a couple of hours of schoolwork to keep Mum happy. By then I’m normally pretty tired so I’ll go to bed and try and dream of some chick or some shit (laughs).
How was it having Julian and Mick in town filming for ‘Scratching the Surface’?
It was pretty cool. They are both really mellow and nice guys. It was pretty mental seeing a helicopter buzzing around every time they surfed. I know a lot of the guys were off the hype around those guys, especially with the helicopter, but I was cool with it.
What are you expecting from Julian’s new movie?
I think it’s should be really good. With the way those guys were surfing over here, you know it’s going sick. I just hope there is none of that techno shit in the movie. I hate it. I’d also be pretty off it if there was any rap in it.
Will a West Oz surfer ever win a World Title?
Of course they will. This year is TB’s year for sure. He’s going to take down that Jordy guy. He’s not that good anyway (laughs). Taj is going to win this year mate.
