Hell Team on da Rock
November 7th, 2012 by Ben Whitmore | Filed under Blog.
Rip Curl has taken a team of grubby grommets and stuck them on the rock to cut their teeth real waves. While they’re there they’ll also learn the ins and outs of professional surfing and dealing with media hounds like us at Waves. They’ll also learn how to look after themselves in some of the heavy situations you can often find yourself in. Not a bad deal really is it? Here is all the action from their first day in surfing mecca. Report by Flanno. Images by Dan Warbrick.

With a good sized swell reading 13ft at 14 seconds on the buoys continuing through the night, the first full day at the beach house started with a session at Backdoor, OTW and a few roping rights off the sand bank at Gums.

The grommet Hell Team hit the water at days break and pushed themselves over the ledge at the heaving beachies between Gums & OTW. Barrels, beatings and broken boards ensued until the call was made before lunch to pull out the guns, strap on the oversized leggies and head to the man sized peaks at Rockpiles.

The infamous boil was surging and standing waves up so that the groms had to muscle up and commit to some steep take-offs into the winding walls running off the ledge. All involved managed to snag a few bombs as the swell peaked through lunch and came in walking that little bit taller for the experience.

Today was a good day to build the confidence in nice conditions will set up the team for a solid crack at the famed stretch of coast over the next week.
