Davey Wins.

For the second year in a row, an Australian has won the Oakley World Junior Championships in Bali. This afternoon, Narrabeen lad Davey Cathels overcame a red-hot Andrew Doheny to net himself the victory and the 25k winners cheque. Not long after jumping off the dais, Waves called Davey to discuss the victory…

First off, how ya feeling?

So stoked. I can’t explain it really. I came into this event with a bunch of first round knockouts on the Europe leg of the WQS and just thought to myself that I’m going to have fun… To come away with the win is a pretty good feeling.

Is it the highlight of your life?

It’s definitely the biggest win I’ve ever had and the most satisfying and it was epic that the waves pumped the whole time. To have Droid (Doheny) in final and Garrett in the semi was awesome as well.

Was it more satisfying to have your oldies there?

Yeah, my mum and my sisters get too nervous watching me surf, but my Dad, my older sister’s boyfriend and a bunch of Narrabeen guys were there to support me. I haven’t travelled much with my Dad this year, so to have him there was definitely good.

How mad do you think the Narrabeen Sands will be going tonight?

Hopefully everyone will be having a beer, but I think they might be saving it for me until I get home. I know that I’ll be going pretty mad tonight…

This is the highlights of the Girls yesterday. Davey isn’t in it, but it’s still cool.

What was your hardest heat?

Definitely the final. It was gnarly. The scores that we were dropping were pretty massive.

Did you practice that claim you did (Davey’s 9.63 ride)?

(Laughs) Yeah I saw Jordy Smith do that one a couple of times so I copied it off him. I never claim, but if there was ever a time to do it then that was it.

What’s the plan now?

I’m throwing up whether to go to Brazil or not for the next World Junior or do the six-star WQS event in Santa Cruz. I’m not sure what to do, but I’ll figure it out next week with my Dad and manager after I celebrate.

And finally, what’s your thoughts on the Australian World Junior event that’s moved from Narrabeen to Burleigh next year?

It kinda sucks I guess. It would have been nice to have the event on home soil and try and win at home, but Burleigh will still be good. At least it’s still in Oz and the wave is still pretty cool.

Alright go celebrate…

Yeah I will. Cheers
