What is the best thing about freesurfing as opposed to comps?
“It really depends on the personality of the player(s).”
How will your Black Knight video submission separate itself from the other guy’s clips?
“It’s hard to separate yourself these days. Everything’s kinda been done, but I’ll give it a crack. I don’t currently have the time or budget to be buzzing around the world chasing the perfect clip, so I’m gonna keep the edit real day-to-day session based and light hearted. I’ll maybe ride a few alternate boards.”
What’s one of the main goals you have in the freesurfing realm?
“I’m a bit uncomfortable with the term ‘freesurfer’. I mean, I work two jobs, so I’m not living that glorified surreal freesurfing dream the media beat it up to be. In saying that, I’m out to establish myself within the industry, give something back to the sport and make some money ‘cause rent ain’t cheap and girlfriends are expensive.”
Are there any destinations you want to tick off your list to get some diversity in your footage?
“I’ve heard Mona Vale has been sick lately, love to get down there and shoot some stuff. I’ve been seeing a few good waves at Curl Curl on the cams, it could be cool to venture that far down the beaches and surf some unfamiliar spots. I’ll see how my budget goes though.”
“Which freesurfers do you find inspiring?
“I’m drawing from Bob McTavish for his surfing and innovation in board design in the late 60s. Bunker Spreckels for the lifestyle he led in the early 70s. Gerry Lopez for the image he portrayed. Also, Alex Knost and Jason Salisbury.” |
